I'm visiting NY for 9 days over the Christmas period and have a query about footwear. I'm a total heel addict and normally like to charge about in very high shoes. I'm obviously bringing a pair of flat boots for the long days of walking planned, but I'm really happier with my normal shoes on!

In the event the sidewalks are bad, do people wear flat shoes to restaurants etc then check them in with their coats and switch to other shoes? What's the etiquette? It's impossible to know whether the streets will be slushy, icy or wet in advance. Sidewalk grates are the bigger issue - they're all over, and thin heels get caught in them and break off.
Most restaurants don't have coat checks. A ificant of women in NY wear tennis shoes, etc. If they don't keep them in their office, they carry the other pair of shoes, typically in something like a plastic shopping bag.
I am no expert on this but I have noticed an increasing of high heels and even with jeans. BB has given you some good reasons but there are a lot of women and in this city probably men too who will wear trainers sneakers to and from work and change into heels I don't know why you couldn't do it at a restaurant if you have a place to put them. I don't wear really high heels ever, but I have some experience with changing clothes in a restaurant before dining.
I promise you, your trip will be ruined if you don't come prepared with very comfortable walking shoes and even then, you're likely to get blisters if you're not used to doing a lot of walking. This is a walking city. It's common for women to carry around a pair of heels to change into when they arrive at their destination. The issue will not likely be slush although possible but perhaps wet and COLD. If you're not happy in boots, at least bring some comfortable flat or low walking shoes.
I have to wear comfortable shoes when I'm touring but I always schlepp around dress shoes in the city. My purse doubles as 'luggage' so it's always big enough to carry a pair of dress shoes, a silk scarf or warmer pashmina, cheapo evening jewelry, High heel forums. One word of caution: If your Achilles tendons are contracted from constant high heel wearing, don't be surprised if you feel a bit uncomfortable as your muscles and tendons stretch to provide you with the postural control your high heels have been depriving you of!
You can always decide to buy a pair of shoes with a heel somewhere between your stilettos and a flat shoe. A little bit of a heel is actually a good thing for walkers.
Stilettos won't provide you with any support as you try to navigate the uneven sidewalks in NYC. Gosh you guys are quick! I must confess I'm schlepping to work in my Uggs at the moment and changing into my stilettos when I get there. I stress that this is for warmth and not ease as I often stumble and trip in them!
I do have a really comfy pair of leather boots for walking, but they are knee high so quite difficult to whip off. I think the answer to this is make my OH carry me everywhere I think the OP already knows, or will learn soon enough, that stilettos are not great for walking around in NYC.
I thought the main issue was changing from one pair of shoes to another before dining Just go to the ladies room to take off your knee high boots and put on your stilettos if necessary. Hey, if I can get my three young daughters changed from their longjohns and boots into their Christmas dresses and fancy shoes before dining at the Plaza on a frigidly cold day, you can change a pair of shoes. High heels!
